Schönbrunn in a nutshell
Schönbrunn Palace lies in Vienna's 13th district, about 15 minutes by U-Bahn from the city centre. Empress Maria Theresa turned an older hunting lodge into the imperial summer residence from 1743. Emperor Franz Joseph was born here in 1830 and died here on 21 November 1916; his rooms are kept as they were in that year.
Palace and gardens have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The operator counted around 3.96 million admissions to the palace and its garden attractions in 2025. The park itself is free and not included in that figure.
