The Hofburg at a glance

Schönbrunn was the Habsburgs' summer palace. The Hofburg is their palace in the city centre, and today the complex holds several museums. The best known for Schönbrunn visitors is the Sisi Museum with the Imperial Apartments, entered through the Michaelerkuppel. It is run by the same company that operates Schönbrunn.

The Sisi Museum counted 927,000 visits in 2025. It is closed for a redesign at the moment, and that shapes every plan for the next few weeks.

Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments in 2026

The museum section is temporarily closed until the new Sisi Museum opens on 19 November 2026. Until 18 November the official site lists reduced prices and changed hours. Prices below are for adults unless stated, as listed on 19 October 2026.

TicketAdultsChildren 6 to 18Students 19 to 25
Day ticket, Sisi Museum€15€9€13.50
Day ticket with guided tour (Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments, about 60 min)€33€22€31

With the Vienna City Card the day ticket costs €13.50 and the Sisi Pass €51. Until 18 November the Hofburg opens daily from 10:00 to 16:30, with last entry at 16:00. Guided tours run in German at 11:30 and 15:30 and in English at 14:00.

From 19 or 20 November the prices change for the season. The new prices had not been published in mid-October, and one listing showed higher figures than the official site. Check the official Sisi Museum website for your date before you book.

What you see in the Imperial Apartments

The Imperial Apartments show the imperial rooms in the city. The Sisi Museum is devoted to Empress Elisabeth, and its redesign is the reason for the closure. The guided tour combines both parts and takes about 60 minutes.

The official site also mentions a "Silver Collection" as part of the redesigned experience. It does not say whether the silver chamber is included in the ticket, and independent sources disagree on whether it is open at all. Do not plan around it. Ask at the ticket desk or check the official site first.

A visit to the Hofburg pairs well with Schönbrunn. Schönbrunn shows the private rooms of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth, and the Hofburg adds the museum and apartments in the city. The Schönbrunn tickets guide explains the Sisi Pass in detail.

Other things to see around the Hofburg

The district has more than the Sisi Museum. Two other imperial sights are worth a place on the list.

Imperial Treasury

The Treasury is open daily except Tuesday from 9:00 to 17:30, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Since 1 April 2026 you need a time slot. Adults pay €16 online and €18 at the venue, reduced tickets cost €12 and €14, and visitors under 19 enter free. A combined ticket with the Imperial Carriage Museum at Schönbrunn, called "Kaiserin Elisabeth", costs €25.

Spanish Riding School

Performances start at €26 and last about 45 or 70 minutes, depending on the programme. Morning Exercise starts at €17 and takes about 60 minutes. A guided tour in German starts at €24 and takes about 60 minutes. Dates for 2026 were not listed on the start page, so check the school's calendar.

Carriage Museum at Schönbrunn

The Imperial Carriage Museum is at Schönbrunn, not in the Hofburg. Adults pay €12 online and €14 at the desk, and a time slot has been required since 1 April 2026. See the opening hours page for its seasons.

Plan your Hofburg day

Three ways to fit the visit into a Vienna trip.

Before 19 November

Expect a reduced offer and book the guided tour only after you have read what the official site says for your date. If the Sisi Museum is your main reason to come, consider moving the visit to after the reopening.

After 19 November

The redesigned museum opens, and prices change for the season. The Sisi Pass is valid for one year from issue, so buying early does not lose the Schönbrunn part.

A full imperial day

Start in the Hofburg and the Treasury in the morning. In the afternoon go on to the Belvedere or take the U4 to Schönbrunn. The Vienna guide lists what else lies within walking distance.
