Schönbrunn Zoo at a glance
The zoo sits at the western end of the palace grounds in Vienna's 13th district. It started in 1752 as the imperial menagerie, and the operator calls it the oldest zoo in the world. The Imperial Pavilion, from where you now watch the pandas, dates from the same year. Today the zoo keeps around 500 species and, according to its own brochure, welcomes about 2 million visitors a year.
The zoo is open every day. It has its own ticket, separate from the palace ticket, but it is part of the Classic Pass Plus. The palace park next to it is free, so you can walk between the two without paying.

The giant pandas Lan Yun and He Feng
The pair Lan Yun (female) and He Feng (male) were both born in 2020 at the giant panda research centre in China. They arrived in Vienna in April 2025 and have been on show since mid-May 2025. The zoo works with the China Wildlife Conservation Association, a partnership that began in 2003 and was extended for ten years in June 2024.
The pandas live apart from each other. The enclosure was rebuilt for them: the male's indoor area is about a third larger, and the outdoor area has ponds and climbing frames. You can watch from the Imperial Pavilion.
The earlier pandas Yang Yang and Yuan Yuan and the twins Fu Feng and Fu Ban no longer live in Vienna. We found no report of new panda cubs in 2026, so do not plan a visit around one.
Opening hours by month
Open daily. The ticket desk closes and the last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
| Period | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| January | 9:00 am to 4:30 pm |
| February | 9:00 am to 5:00 pm |
| March | 9:00 am to 5:30 pm |
| April to September | 9:00 am to 6:30 pm |
| October until the clocks change (25 October 2026) | 9:00 am to 5:30 pm |

In November and December you therefore have little daylight. Arrive at opening time and see the pandas first. The Desert House inside the zoo is open 365 days a year, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in winter and to 6:00 pm from May to September.
Entrances and how to get there
The zoo has three entrances. The first is the easiest for most visitors.
Main entrance, Hietzing gate
Take the U4 to Hietzing, one stop after Schönbrunn. The Palm House and the Desert House lie on the way to the gate.
Getting there →Tirolergarten entrance
It is next to the car park on Seckendorff-Gudent-Weg. The path is steep and not suitable for wheelchairs.
Engelstor park gate
Since 25 August 2026 pedestrians can enter the park through the new Engelstor gate near the Kennedy Bridge. It leads to the park, the zoo and the Imperial Carriage Museum.
Dogs are not allowed, except assistance dogs with proof. Wheelchairs are free at all three entrances if you book them in advance.

No. The zoo is part of the Classic Pass Plus, which costs €81 for adults from 1 July to 2 November 2026. The Palace Ticket and the Classic Pass do not include it.

Hietzing on the U4, one stop after Schönbrunn. From there you walk to the Hietzing gate, passing the Palm House and the Desert House.

The operator gives no official figure. As our own estimate, plan three to four hours for a relaxed visit, more if you add the Palm House and Desert House.
